Italy

Italy has more than 4,000 years of winemaking experience and a near-perfect climate for producing winemaking grapes. It’s no secret why their wines are so highly sought-after. Winemaking is embedded in Italian culture and is considered a valuable part of the nation’s history.

Alasia Barolo

Vines are trained on a low Guyot trellis at 4-5,000 vines/ha. The grapes are hand-harvested, de-stemmed, and crushed before going into small fermenters for 12 days, with daily pumping-over. The wine is drained off at dryness, and the skins are transferred to a small press. After pressing, the wine is settled for two days and then racked in stainless steel tanks for malolactic fermentation. After three years of maturation in 50hl Slavonian oak casks, it is racked from oak and gently fined.

A fine, expressive style with Barolo’s classic combination of mature, lightly floral aromas with richness and structure. Dark plum, leather and delicate violet aromas, plus notes of woodsmoke and brown spice. A full, firm and ripe red with rich, powerful flavours. All balanced by ripe tannins, complex savoury notes and a long finish.

Decant and drink with roasted red meats or game.

Alasia

Alasia is a name that evokes the history of Monferrato and the love that Araldica has for the Piedmontese hills, history and legend. The only daughter of Emperor Otto I, the beautiful Alasia fell in love with Aleramo, a knight of extraordinary ability but poor in dowry. Unable to get married, the two fled to Italy, and legend has it that they took refuge right between Asti and Acqui Terme, on the edge of Castel Boglione, where the remains of the so-called Ca’ d’Alasia are still visible. After various vicissitudes and adventures, Otto forgave the two and granted Aleramo as much land as he had managed to cover by horse in three days. Aleramo, who knew those lands perfectly, travelled the length and breadth of the hills north and south of the Tanaro, now included between the provinces of Asti and Alessandria: Monferrato was born.

The Alasia range was introduced in the mid-1990s to create a distinctive range of wines from Araldica’s best vineyards. It uses the most modern winemaking techniques to add expression to these local varieties. The name (and label design) are taken from the legend of the Medieval Princess Alasia. Araldica is Piemonte’s most forward-thinking co-operative, situated in Castel Boglione, in the heart of Barbera d’Asti territory. It works with 230 grower members to source quality grapes from around 690ha of vineyards. Many of its members joined the co-operative in the 1950s and have a long and loyal relationship with the winery. Araldica produces wines from Piemonte’s main DOC / DOCG regions—predominantly Barbera, Gavi, and Moscato, but also including Barolo, Barbaresco, and Roero Arneis.
